Introducing The WP Open Community Collective

PARA SU PUBLICACIÓN INMEDIATA

July 23, 2026 — The WP Community Collective is changing its name to The WP Open Community Collective (the WPOCC), reflecting its broader mission to support contributors across the open source ecosystem.

“Our roots are in WordPress, but the people and principles of open source, and the challenges facing both, extend beyond any single project. Now it is clearer that the WPOCC does too.”

– Sé Reed
CEO, The WP Open Community Collective

The rebrand comes after the close of the organization’s first State of the Community survey, a community-wide survey examining contributor sentiment and participation, the impact of AI, and the importance of open source values across the WordPress ecosystem. Those findings will be shared in a report in early August.

Why Now?

On July 2, Reed unintentionally discovered the WordPress Foundation’s pending trademark application for the acronym “WPCC”. The wordmark, related to the WordPress Campus Connect program started by meetup organizers in Ajmer, India, was filed in May of 2025. No notification, dispute, or claim has been made with the WP Community Collective, but the board decided to take a proactive approach.

“We’d rather make this change now, on our own terms, than wait for a problem we can clearly see coming,” said Reed. “The WordPress community doesn’t need any more conflict. That’s not the kind of contribution we support.”

Same Mission, Same Commitment

This update applies only to branding and communications. The website has been converted to thewpocc.org, as have social media accounts.

The WPOCC’s mission, programming, membership, and leadership are unchanged, as are the organization’s formal name and legal documentation.

“We all collectively chose this project and this community, but this evolution allows us to reflect the Collective’s intent to work in the open, as well as our aspirations towards Open Source stewardship broadly,” said Chris Reynolds, Interim President of the WPOCC Board of Directors.
